Yeah if it had been the alternator, your car might have started, but your cd player/air conditioning wouldn't have turned on at all, and your display/lights would have been very dim. So you definitely got screwed on the alternator/battery, sorry to say.. If your car doesn't start but everything else works, it's almost always your starter.
